Lawrence S. Lustberg, Director in the Gibbons P.C. Commercial & Criminal Litigation Group and longtime Director of the firm’s John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law, is one of only 41 business leaders throughout the state to earn a 2022 ICON Award from NJBIZ, one of New Jersey’s premier business news publications. Winners were honored at an awards ceremony on June 28 at The Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset, New Jersey and will be profiled in a special supplement to an upcoming issue of NJBIZ.

NJBIZ launched the ICON Awards program in 2017 to celebrate New Jersey business leaders over the age of 60 who have achieved noteworthy success, demonstrated strong leadership and unique vision, and shown a longstanding commitment to the New Jersey business community. The ICON Awards acknowledge years of exceptional work in the state and in the winners’ respective industries. Mr. Lustberg is the fifth Gibbons attorney to receive this award, after Karen A. Giannelli (2020), who recently retired after over 40 years with the firm, Thomas J. Cafferty (2019), James R. Zazzali (2018), and Michael R. Griffinger (2017).

“It has been my privilege to have been able to work so closely with Larry for nearly 30 years,” said Peter J. Torcicollo, Managing Director of Gibbons. “He is truly deserving of the ICON Award, and all of his colleagues at Gibbons congratulate him on this honor.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Lustberg has argued groundbreaking cases before federal and state courts up to the U.S. Supreme Court, and he is well known and highly regarded for his extensive criminal defense, public interest, and pro bono work. He is a recognized authority in constitutional and criminal law and procedure, responsible for many seminal federal and state court decisions in a broad range of cases. After serving a pivotal role in the historic 2013 overturning of New Jersey’s ban on same-sex marriage, Mr. Lustberg was named the state’s “Lawyer of the Year” by the New Jersey Law Journal, which also presented him with one of its first Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2016. He is the former president of both the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey and Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey, each of which has awarded him its highest honor – the William J. Brennan, Jr. Award and Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award, respectively.

Mr. Lustberg has earned numerous other accolades, from such organizations as the Lawyers Alliance for New York, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, ACLU of New Jersey, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Legal Services of New Jersey, Garden State Equality, Partners for Women and Justice, Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, and Essex County Bar Association, among many others. He has long been listed in Thomson Reuters New Jersey Super Lawyers, Woodward/White Best Lawyers®, and the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and he was included in the inaugural Star Ledger Inside Jersey’s “100+ Club,” recognizing the most influential people in New Jersey.
