Robert Johnson, Chief Diversity Officer of Gibbons P.C. and a Director in the firm’s Corporate Department, has been selected to the inaugural ROI-NJ “Champions of the C-Suite” list as a winner in the “CDO/CHRO Champions” category. Mr. Johnson and fellow honorees were honored at the Champions of the C-Suite event, held at the Bridgewater Manor in Bridgewater, New Jersey on February 19.

According to ROI-NJ, “The winners in the CDO/CHRO Champions category … represent the best champions for diversity and human resources in business.” Winners were also selected in the categories of CEO Champions, CFO Champions, CIO/CTO Champions, CMO Champions, and Chairman/Board Member Champions. The honorees were chosen by the ROI-NJ Editorial Board and an independent panel of judges.

“We are extremely proud of Rob and all that he has accomplished in his two years as the firm’s Chief Diversity Officer,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons. “His dedication to promoting recruitment and retention policies and practices that support diversity and inclusion is unwavering, and the firm congratulates him on this recognition.”

As Chief Diversity Officer, Mr. Johnson is responsible for overseeing the Gibbons Diversity Initiative (GDI), developing and supporting various platforms to promote and achieve a broadly inclusive workforce and workplace through ethnic, gender, and other forms of diversity. As Chief Diversity Officer, Mr. Johnson also focuses on strengthening GDI’s effectiveness, reach, and impact on the legal community by directing strategies to enhance both the internal components of GDI – training, mentoring, retention, and innovative programming – and its external components, encompassing industry-wide thought leadership, pipeline programs for the profession’s future leaders, engagement with like-minded business associations, community outreach, and supplier diversity. In 2018, he helped create and launch the Gibbons Clerkship to Associate Pipeline (CAP) Program, which helps highly qualified students of diverse backgrounds, selected by participating faculty and administrators of three area law schools (Rutgers-Newark, Rutgers-Camden, and Seton Hall), to prepare for post-law school employment. In 2019, Mr. Johnson was selected to the inaugural Lawyers of Color “Nation’s Best” list as an Eastern Region Honoree.

Mr. Johnson’s legal practice concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, securities regulations, corporate governance, public finance, cross-border transactions, and various other corporate transactional matters. He represents public and private companies, commercial banks, and governmental agencies and helps his business clients to expand their markets and establish significant presence throughout the region. He has previously been included on the New Jersey Law Journal “New Leaders of the Bar” list.
