The crucial need to protect health data impacts all participants in the healthcare industry: patients, providers and payers. Protecting health information is not just about HIPAA, although this program will address significant developments in HIPAA enforcement. The program will also address the increasing role of the Federal Trade Commission in protecting the privacy and security of health data and where FTC enforcement might lead. Finally, this program will also address the rapidly increasing role that states’ attorneys general are playing in protecting health data through both HIPAA enforcement and the enforcement of consumer protection law. Of particular interest to attorneys attending the Annual Meeting, special focus will be given to the efforts made by the attorneys general of New Jersey and New York the protection of health-related data. The goal of this program is to educate and provide practical guidance to attorneys representing or advising participants in the healthcare industry on protecting the privacy and security of health-related data.
