A Supreme Court Justice and experienced appellate practitioners discuss the avenues to a Supreme Court appeal and the actual practice in that court. Discussion will include requirements for certification per R. 2:12-4 with elaboration on how a “matter of general public importance” is viewed; appeals as of right per R. 2:2-1(a) and the scope of “issues as to which there is a dissent in the Appellate Division;” differences between Supreme Court and Appellate Division practice; differences in brief writing in the Appellate Division and Supreme Court; and what the Justices view as good brief writing.
