The New Jersey State Bar Foundation (NJSBF) conferred its highest award, the Medal of Honor, on Michael R. Griffinger, a Director in the Business & Commercial Litigation Department of Gibbons P.C. The award was presented at the foundation’s annual awards dinner on June 20, 2013 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.

Mr. Griffinger is the third Gibbons attorney to earn this award, along with past Medal of Honor recipients John J. Gibbons, former Chief Judge of the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and James R. Zazzali, former Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court.

NJSBF annually awards its Medal of Honor to professionals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of the justice system or the betterment of the legal profession in New Jersey and have attained professional excellence as demonstrated by accomplishments in the law or service to the profession and the community.

As a lawyer, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a mentor, a friend, a philanthropist, a role model, and a leader, Michael Griffinger has demonstrated the qualities and attributes worthy of his receipt of the Medal of Honor Award,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons

Mr. Griffinger’s service to the judicial system is long-standing and impressive. In recent years, he has served as Chairman of the Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association; Chairman of the Board of Volunteer Lawyers for Justice; and Chairman of the Board of Legal Services Foundation. In the broader community, Mr. Griffinger has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center since 1995, and he founded the Fresh Air Fund Games. Recognition for his outreach efforts has been extensive. For example, in a single year, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice bestowed on Mr. Griffinger its “Champion of Change” Award; Trial Attorneys of New Jersey its Trial Bar Award; and the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey its William J. Brennan, Jr. Award.

Mr. Griffinger has been a prominent litigator for over 40 years. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, American Bar Foundation, and International Academy of Trial Lawyers, all peer recognition organizations with the highest of standards and requirements for induction. Regularly included in the Woodward/White Best Lawyers® annual guide, Mr. Griffinger has been selected for inclusion by his peers in the 2013 edition in seven different categories. He has also been listed in the most recent editions of Thomson Reuters New Jersey Super Lawyers and the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.
