The Thurgood Marshall College Fund bestowed on Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons P.C., one of its prestigious Awards of Excellence at the organization’s 14th Annual Awards of Excellence Dinner, held on March 13, 2014 at Nanina’s in Belleville, New Jersey.

Mr. Dunican’s award honors his dedication to the Gibbons Diversity Initiative (GDI). Mr. Dunican hired the firm’s first Chief Diversity Officer and has expanded GDI from a fledgling corporate inclusion program to an award-winning thought leader in the area of workplace diversity. GDI presents sophisticated programs featuring renowned experts addressing inclusion policies that enhance client service and business success. The Initiative also supports pipeline initiatives for future generations of attorneys and maintains an innovative supplier diversity program. Based on his experience with GDI, Mr. Dunican has co-authored several well received thought leadership articles on topics relating to diversity, including one in the Seton Hall Law Review focused on ending the revolving door syndrome for minority attorneys in law firms.

“I am honored to join fellow Award of Excellence recipients John Gibbons and Larry Lustberg,” says Dunican. John J. Gibbons (2008), is the firm’s name partner and standard bearer, and Lawrence S. Lustberg (2011), is the director of the John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law and Chair of the firm’s Criminal Defense Department.

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund was established in 1987 to provide financial and administrative assistance to students wishing to attend a historically black public college or university. Its annual Awards of Excellence program honors outstanding achievements in the field of law and a commitment to justice, civil rights, and education.

For his efforts, Mr. Dunican has also been recognized in the Profiles in Diversity Journal “Leadership in Action” series, which features CEOs who are increasing diversity in their corporations and industries. In addition, Gibbons was asked to lead the New Jersey State Bar Association’s strategic plan for diversity that will guide the organization and its member attorneys and firms.
