July 7, 2020
Karen A. Giannelli, Director and past Chair of the Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Department at Gibbons P.C., is one of 26 business leaders throughout the state to earn a 2020 “Icon Award” from NJBIZ, one of New Jersey’s premier business news publications. Winners will be honored at a virtual ceremony on August 18 and profiled in a special supplement to an upcoming issue of NJBIZ.
NJBIZ launched the Icon Awards program in 2017 to celebrate New Jersey business leaders over the age of 60 who have achieved noteworthy success, demonstrated strong leadership and unique vision, and shown a longstanding commitment to the New Jersey business community. The Icon Honors recognize years of exceptional work in the state and in the winners’ respective industries. Ms. Giannelli joins fellow Gibbons attorneys Thomas J. Cafferty, Michael R. Griffinger, and James R. Zazzali as an Icon Award recipient.
Among Ms. Giannelli’s many qualifications for the honor is her nearly 40-year career at Gibbons, during which she has advised public and private companies and financial institutions throughout the country in the areas of financial restructuring, creditors’ rights, and financial services. She served as Chair of the firm’s highly regarded Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Department, overseeing numerous attorneys and an active practice spanning three firm offices, and was one of the founding members of the award-winning Gibbons Women’s Initiative, which serves to develop young women professionals and extends opportunities for mentoring and networking throughout the firm and professional community.
Ms. Giannelli’s distinctions outside of Gibbons are also extensive. Most recently, she was honored with a 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey Law Journal. Earlier this year, she was elected a Vice-President of the American College of Bankruptcy. She was a founding member and the first president of the Women in Federal Practice in New Jersey Inc. and was also the first woman elected Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Law Section. She previously served on the Board of the New Jersey Chapter of Turnaround Management Association and was the chapter’s first female president. Ms. Giannelli is an active member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, Essex County Bar Association, and American Bar Association, as well as the NJSBA, and she frequently serves on the Third Circuit Merit Selection Committee for United States Bankruptcy Court Judgeships. Ms. Giannelli is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is also consistently ranked in Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, Best Lawyers, and New Jersey Super Lawyers.
