Karen A. Giannelli, a Director and past Chair of the Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Department of Gibbons P.C., has earned a 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey Law Journal. Ms. Giannelli will be honored at the Professional Excellence Awards Dinner in September.

Through its Lifetime Achievement Awards, the New Jersey Law Journal celebrates individuals who have helped to shape the legal industry in New Jersey. Ms. Giannelli is the sixth Gibbons attorney to receive this honor, after Christine A. Amalfe, Lawrence S. Lustberg, and James R. Zazzali (2015); Michael R. Griffinger (2016); and Thomas J. Cafferty (2018). Ms. Giannelli’s fellow recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award is Robert S. Peckar of Peckar & Abramson, P.C.

“The New Jersey Law Journal joins many other organizations and publications – not to mention a host of satisfied clients – that have recognized Karen’s enormous contributions to the legal and bankruptcy professions and the broader community,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons P.C.

Among Ms. Giannelli’s many qualifications for the honor is her nearly 40-year career at Gibbons, during which she has advised public and private companies and financial institutions throughout the country in the areas of financial restructuring, creditors’ rights, and financial services. She served as Chair of the firm’s highly regarded Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Department, overseeing numerous attorneys and an active practice spanning three firm offices, and was one of the founding members of the award-winning Gibbons Women’s Initiative, which serves to develop young women professionals and extends opportunities for mentoring and networking throughout the firm and professional community.

Ms. Giannelli’s distinctions outside of Gibbons are also extensive. She was a founding member and the first president of the Women in Federal Practice in New Jersey Inc. She was recently elected a Vice-President of the American College of Bankruptcy and serves on the Board of the New Jersey Chapter of Turnaround Management Association and was the chapter’s first female president. She was also the first woman elected Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Law Section. She is an active member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, and Essex County Bar Association, as well as the ABA, and she frequently serves on the Third Circuit Merit Selection Committee for United States Bankruptcy Court Judgeships. Ms. Giannelli is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
