Kristin D. Sostowski, a Director in the Employment & Labor Law Department of Gibbons P.C. and leader of the firm’s Higher Education Team, was inducted as President of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) at the organization’s Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon, held on July 18, 2019 at the Grand Hyatt New York.

A longtime champion of women’s professional advancement, Ms. Sostowski has been active in NAWL, the nation’s oldest professional organization dedicated to the progress of women lawyers and women’s legal rights, for over a decade. She received the organization’s Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Member Award in 2010 and has served as a member of its Executive Board since 2011. As President, Ms. Sostowski will help to develop, implement, and support research and programming that address NAWL’s dual mission of advancing both women in the legal profession and women’s rights under the law.

Noting in her induction speech that she ascends to the NAWL presidency in the year marking the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, Ms. Sostowski reflects on how much progress American women have made – and how much remains to be done. “As NAWL’s founders have taught us, we can truly advance in this profession only when we achieve broader equality, and we must not rest until we do.”

“Given her longstanding commitment to the promotion of women in the profession, Kristin has already had an incredible, positive impact on the legal community at large,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons. “In her new, well-earned leadership position with NAWL, she will no doubt help the organization, its members, and women attorneys nationwide to achieve new heights.”

In addition to her work with NAWL, Ms. Sostowski has been a Trustee of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association since 2008. Earlier this year, Ms. Sostowski was named one of New Jersey’s “Best 50 Women in Business” by NJBIZ, one of the leading business news publications in the state, in a feature that honors New Jersey’s successful and influential women in business. Profiles in Diversity Journal also selected her for its 2019 “Women Worth Watching” issue, which recognizes women who have demonstrated high levels of leadership.

At Gibbons, Ms. Sostowski balances her practice between employment litigation and counseling, representing New Jersey and national employers in a wide variety of industries. She provides strategic counsel to clients at all phases of the employment relationship, tackling and resolving her clients’ thorniest employment challenges. Known for her tenacious advocacy, strategic approach, and attention to detail, Ms. Sostowski advises employers regarding compliance with federal and state workplace laws, pre-litigation risk avoidance, and defense of workplace-related disputes in state and federal courts and agencies. She also co-founded and leads the firm’s Higher Education Team, a multidisciplinary practice that provides advice, counsel, training, and litigation services designed to help both public and independent institutions tackle the unique regulatory challenges that govern higher education.

Ms. Sostowski is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has been listed in Woodward/White Best Lawyers®, Thomson Reuters New Jersey Super Lawyers, and Benchmark Litigation, as well as among NJBIZ’s “Forty Under 40.”
