It is with great sadness that Gibbons P.C. announces the passing of Michael F. Quinn, a highly regarded commercial litigator and the firm’s General Counsel, on September 24, 2018. Mr. Quinn had spent his entire post-clerkship legal career at Gibbons.

“For a long period of time, Mike was intimately involved in making Gibbons the special place it is, helping us to create and preserve our special culture and build our unique brand of client service,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons. “He had a steady hand, a calm demeanor, and a brilliant mind.”

After serving as law secretary to the Honorable H. Curtis Meanor, United States District Judge for the District of New Jersey, Mr. Quinn started his 35 years at Gibbons, where he served as lead counsel in numerous trials and complex litigation in state and federal courts and arbitrations in New Jersey and throughout the United States.

His broad litigation and trial experience encompassed a wide range of complex business disputes, as well as intellectual property (patent, trade secret, copyright, and trademark), restrictive covenant, and antitrust and unfair competition litigation. For various pharmaceutical industry clients, Mr. Quinn successfully litigated and tried matters involving licensing supply and manufacturing disputes, FDA regulatory issues, and brand and generic competition issues.

In 2000, Gibbons appointed Mr. Quinn the firm’s General Counsel, a critical management function that he undertook while also maintaining his active litigation practice. In his role as “the lawyers’ lawyer,” Mr. Quinn oversaw the firm’s ethics compliance measures, loss prevention activities, and conflicts management process. He interacted with the firm’s attorneys on a daily basis to implement and foster firm-wide policies and practices to ensure that Gibbons attorneys continued to uphold the highest standards of the profession and provide exceptional and efficient service. He also served as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

“Mike was an open-door problem solver who served tirelessly as counsel to an impressive array of clients and to Gibbons itself – a fantastic lawyer and quiet genius whom we all sought out to solve our most difficult substantive problems,” notes Mr. Dunican. “He is irreplaceable. He will be deeply missed.”

Mr. Quinn earned his J.D. from the Seton Hall University School of Law, where he served on the Editorial Board of the Seton Hall Law Review (1980-81). He earned his B.A. from the University of Delaware. He was listed in Woodward/White Best Lawyers® and Thomson Reuters New Jersey Super Lawyers for Business and Commercial Litigation. He was AV® Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell and was listed as a “State Litigation Star” in the area of Business & Commercial Litigation by Benchmark Litigation. He served as a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Ethics Committee, District V-A (1999-2003).
