Lawrence S. Lustberg, Co-Chair of the Gibbons P.C. Commercial & Criminal Litigation Department and longtime Director of the firm’s John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law, was honored with a 2020 Cornerstone Award from the Lawyers Alliance for New York. Honorees, including Mr. Lustberg, were celebrated during a virtual awards ceremony on December 3.
Mr. Lustberg was recognized for his dedication to working with nonprofit organizations, which has included successfully representing Lawyers Alliance in its federal constitutional challenge to New York State’s donor disclosure law. Since 1997, Lawyers Alliance has honored outstanding contributions in pro bono legal services at its annual Cornerstone Awards event. “Through efforts such as [Larry’s], the legal sector is helping nonprofits and community development organizations improve the quality of life for many thousands of low-income New Yorkers,” noted Elizabeth Guggenheim, Executive Director of Lawyers Alliance.
“Larry’s work on behalf of clients and his contributions to public interest law inspire all of us here at Gibbons, and we are extremely proud to see Larry recognized for his efforts,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lustberg has argued groundbreaking cases before federal and state courts up to the U.S. Supreme Court, and he is well known and highly regarded for his extensive criminal defense, public interest, and pro bono legal work. He is a recognized authority in constitutional and criminal law and procedure, responsible for many seminal federal and state court decisions in a broad range of cases. After serving a pivotal role in the historic 2013 overturning of New Jersey’s ban on same-sex marriage, Mr. Lustberg was named the state’s “Lawyer of the Year” by the New Jersey Law Journal, which also presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He is the former president of both the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey and Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey, each of which has awarded him its highest honor – the William J. Brennan, Jr. Award and Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award, respectively. Mr. Lustberg has been the recipient of numerous honors from organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, ACLU of New Jersey, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, Legal Services of New Jersey, Garden State Equality, Partners for Women and Justice, and Essex County Bar Association, among many others. He has long been listed in New Jersey Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers®, and the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and he was included in the inaugural Star Ledger Inside Jersey’s “100+ Club” recognizing the most influential people in New Jersey.
At Gibbons, in addition to co-chairing the firm’s Commercial & Criminal Litigation Department, Mr. Lustberg is the Director of the firm’s John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law, which litigates historic, cutting-edge civil rights and civil liberties cases.
