Gibbons Attorneys Peter Carton and Edwin Stern Honored at Essex County Bar Association Annual Dinner

Peter J. Carton, a Director in the Real Property & Environmental Department of Gibbons P.C., and Edwin H. Stern, Of Counsel at the firm, were honored as Fifty Year members of the Essex County Bar Association (ECBA) at the organization’s annual dinner held on October 19, 2016 at Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville, New Jersey. Twelve other prominent lawyers and judges of the class of 1966 were also honored at this event.
At Gibbons, Mr. Carton concentrates his practice in the areas of real estate development, health care, and public finance. He also is part of the firm’s health care practice group providing services across the full health care spectrum from acquisition, joint venture, corporate management and other contracts. He also has extensive experience involving governmental entities. He served as a member of the governing body and as a former Mayor of the Township of Middletown (Monmouth County’s largest municipality) and as Township Attorney to that township for six years. In addition, Mr. Carton has served as the head of the firm’s Public Finance Practice since its inception in 1981. He has regularly been selected for inclusion to the New Jersey Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers lists for Real Estate Law.
Mr. Stern began his judicial career in 1981, when he was appointed to the bench by then-Governor Brendan T. Byrne. He served in the Superior Court Law Division in Hudson County and Essex County before he was elevated to the Appellate Division in 1985. In 1998, he became a presiding judge in the Appellate Division and, in 2004, the Presiding Judge for Administration of the Appellate Division. He was temporarily assigned to the New Jersey Supreme Court from September 2010 through June 2011. During his judicial career, he authored more than 3,600 written decisions and more than 400 published opinions. Leveraging his judicial experience, he now provides opinions for clients on various issues of concern, advises on such matters as filing appeals, reviews briefs and papers filed in state and federal courts, and conducts moot courts for attorneys before they argue matters in court. He also conducts mediations and arbitrations and serves as a special hearing officer in attorney discipline cases. Mr. Stern is a member of the Council of Chief Judges of State Courts of Appeal; the American Law Institute; the American Bar Association; and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He was the recipient of the Medal of Honor Award from the New Jersey State Bar Foundation in 2015 and the Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Award from the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey in 2014.
