Gibbons Again Earns a Spot on the Law360 List of NJ Powerhouse Law Firms
August 29, 2018
Gibbons P.C. has once again been named a “New Jersey Powerhouse” law firm by Law360, as part of the publication’s “Regional Powerhouses” series. Gibbons has been featured on this list every year it has been published.
The 2018 New Jersey Powerhouse list comprises five law firms selected for “manag[ing] to thrive amid the competition that marks the most densely populated state in the nation.” The selection of Gibbons was based on its longstanding ties to projects that impact New Jersey’s most important industries and its handling of matters that often involve unique New Jersey legislation, pioneering transactions, major land developments, and complex state- and nationwide litigations.
In highlighting recent victories in its Gibbons profile for the Powerhouse series, Law360 notes that the firm “notched a pair of sports victories of national and global proportions in recent months, helping to secure a U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a federal ban on sports betting and gain FIFA approval of a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup.”
The article quotes “renowned litigator” Michael R. Griffinger, as well as Thomas R. Valen and Jennifer A. Hradil, on their ultimate success in May of this year in the years-long legal battle over sports betting, with all three noting that the basis for the victory was the rightness of their argument, that the federal government does not have sweeping authority to dictate state legislation. The profile also summarizes the complexity of the effort to land the rights to host the 2026 World Cup, pointing out that Kevin S. Evans and the Gibbons team “coordinated with various stakeholders in the region on assembling documents related to an array of issues, including marketing rights, facility management and security standards, in connection with soccer games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford and the use of other area locations.”
The two matters most prominently featured in the Law360 profile underscore the firm’s engagement with industries and projects critical to the New Jersey economy—in these cases, sports and gaming, on behalf of the state itself—though the article notes that the firm’s “varied portfolio” also includes representing clients in the hospitality, pharmaceutical, health care, medical device, and higher education arenas, and that, according to Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons, the firm’s work for public entities in such high-profile matters has helped to raise its profile and “drive business in other practice areas.”
