ACLU of NJ Honors Former Justice James Zazzali With Roger N. Baldwin Award

April 10, 2013

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey presented former New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice James R. Zazzali, Of Counsel at Gibbons P.C., with its Roger N. Baldwin Award last night. The award was presented at the organization’s 11th Annual U.S. Supreme Court Briefing, held at the Newark Club in Newark.

“Gibbons is proud to be known as the law firm chosen by retired jurists of James Zazzali’s caliber, and we are delighted that the ACLU of New Jersey has chosen to honor him,” says Patrick C. Dunican Jr., the firm’s Chairman and Managing Director. “His commitment to the community and to the less fortunate is a perfect individual example of a firm-wide mindset that we strive to demonstrate in all of our policies and programs.”

The Roger N. Baldwin Award is named in honor of the principal founder of the ACLU. Justice Zazzali’s award is based on his outstanding work strengthening civil rights and civil liberties in New Jersey, particularly during his time on the state’s Supreme Court. He was named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in 2006, a position he held until stepping down in 2007 at the mandatory retirement age for judges in New Jersey. He was initially appointed to the Court in 2000 and went on to become one of the state’s most admired jurists, exceptionally committed to fairness, especially to children, the elderly, the poor, and workers.

Justice Zazzali began his career representing workers in the South as part of the broader, then-nascent civil rights movement. In the 1980s, he was selected by the United States District Court, District of New Jersey, to serve as a monitor for four correctional facilities, to supervise practices and policies and to issue reports on ways to improve conditions; he led this ground-breaking effort for ten years. In addition, he has served as Attorney General of New Jersey and Commissioner and Chair of the State Commission of Investigation.

At Gibbons, Justice Zazzali advises clients on such matters as corporate governance, institutional ethics, internal investigations, appeals, mediation, and arbitration.
