In recognition of its commitment to “Doing Good While Doing Well,” Gibbons P.C. was named Corporate Citizen of the Year by NJBIZ, the premier weekly newspaper covering the state’s business community, at the 2008 Business of the Year Awards Gala. This award is bestowed on the nominee demonstrating exceptional community involvement and tangible benefits of that involvement throughout the community and state. The Corporate Citizen of the Year must also show a sustained, unique commitment to its employees.

Gibbons was honored for such programs as Gibbons Cares, the collective designation for the firm’s community outreach efforts, through which Gibbons annually donates more than $1 million and extensive pro bono service; the John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest and Constitutional Law, which delivers significant pro bono public interest legal services for the poor and underrepresented throughout the state and nation, tackling major public interest issues; and the Gibbons Experience, a generous benefits program that goes beyond a traditional package to include custom policies and benefits that address individual employee needs.

“None of these initiatives or programs would be possible without the full support of the great Gibbons law firm and the dedication of so many wonderful Gibbons employees,” says Patrick C. Dunican, Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons, who accepted the award on behalf of the firm. “It is this combination that makes our philanthropic activities possible, and it is this kind of employee that inspires us to be such a dedicated employer and exceptional workplace.”

Specific initiatives highlighted included the firm’s extensive pro bono program; the Gibbons Institute of Law, Science and Technology at Seton Hall University School of Law; outreach efforts including “The Great Read,” an annual holiday book and school supplies drive for Newark school children; the firm’s part-time, partnership-track attorney schedule; the technology choices that support flexibility for employees; the Gibbons Women’s Initiative and Diversity Initiative, which help attract, retain, develop, and promote a diverse workforce; and numerous other efforts that underscore the firm’s definition of a good corporate citizen: one who values exemplary dedication in equal parts to clients, employees, and community, recognizing that support of each informs and enhances its approach to the others.
