Karen A. Giannelli, Chair of the Financial Restructuring & Creditors’ Rights Department of Gibbons P.C., was honored with the 2017 Woman of the Year Award by the New Jersey Network of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC-NJ). The award was presented at the organization’s Annual Holiday Party on December 14, 2017 at Mompou in Newark.
IWIRC-NJ was founded to enhance the professional status and reputation of women in the insolvency practice, including attorneys, turnaround managers, accountants, investment bankers, and others. The Woman of the Award recognizes the professional accomplishments and contributions to the practice of insolvency of a distinguished practitioner and role model in the field. Among Ms. Giannelli’s many qualifications for the award is her 35+-year career at Gibbons, during which she has advised public and private companies and financial institutions throughout the country in the areas of financial restructuring, creditors’ rights, and financial services. She manages a group of lawyers and paraprofessionals in three states, overseeing both the legal and business functions of her department. She is also a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and was one of the founding members of the Gibbons Women’s Initiative, which serves to develop young women professionals and extends opportunities for mentoring and networking throughout the firm and professional community.
Ms. Giannelli’s distinctions outside of Gibbons are also extensive. She was a founding member and the first president of the Women in Federal Practice in New Jersey Inc. She serves on the Board of the New Jersey Chapter of Turnaround Management Association and was the chapter’s first female president. She was also the first woman elected Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Law Section and the first woman attorney from New Jersey to be elected into the American College of Bankruptcy, for which she has held leadership positions for several years and currently serves on its Board of Directors. She is an active member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, and Essex County Bar Association, as well as the ABA, and she frequently serves on the Third Circuit Merit Selection Committee for United States Bankruptcy Court Judgeships. Ms. Giannelli is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
“Having already earned accolades from the Executive Women of New Jersey and numerous business and legal industry publications, including the Chambers USA Guide, Best Lawyers, New Jersey Super Lawyers, NJBIZ, Profiles in Diversity Journal, and New Jersey Law Journal,” notes Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons, “Ms. Giannelli richly deserves this latest recognition from IWIRC-NJ.”
