James R. Zazzali, Of Counsel in the Commercial & Criminal Litigation Department at Gibbons P.C., was one of 29 business leaders throughout the state to earn a 2018 “Icon Award” from NJBIZ, New Jersey’s premier business news publication. Winners were honored at a ceremony on August 23 at the Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset, and will be profiled in a special supplement to an upcoming issue of NJBIZ.

NJBIZ launched the Icon Awards program in 2017 to celebrate New Jersey business leaders over the age of 60 who have achieved noteworthy success, demonstrated strong leadership and unique vision, and shown a longstanding commitment to the New Jersey business community. The Icon Honors recognize years of exceptional work in the state and in the winners’ respective industries. Mr. Zazzali is the second Gibbons attorney to earn this award. Michael R. Griffinger, a Director in the Gibbons Commercial & Criminal Litigation Department, was one of the first Icon Awards recipients in 2017.

Mr. Zazzali joined Gibbons in 2007, after retiring from the bench. He had served on the Supreme Court for over six years, and had written more than 100 opinions, before he was named Chief Justice in 2006. At Gibbons, Mr. Zazzali advises clients on such matters as corporate governance, institutional ethics, internal investigations, appeals, mediation, and arbitration. He also currently serves as Chair of Governor Murphy’s Judicial Advisory Panel and was named Special Ethics Counsel to the Gubernatorial Transition Committee from November 2017 – January 2018.

Prior to his service on the bench, Mr. Zazzali had served as, among other positions, general counsel for the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, Chairman of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation, New Jersey Attorney General, and Chief of the Appeals Division of the Office of the Essex County Prosecutor. Mr. Zazzali is a past recipient of both the Sidney H. Lehman Award from the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Medal of Honor Award from the New Jersey State Bar Foundation, as well as the Roger N. Baldwin Award from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Jersey Law Journal. He is also listed in Woodward/White Best Lawyers® in the areas of Bet-The-Company Litigation and Commercial Litigation.
