Lawrence S. Lustberg, Chair of the Criminal Defense Department and the Director of the John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law at Gibbons P.C., has been named to The Star-Ledger Inside Jersey’s inaugural “100+ Club,” a compilation of the most influential people in New Jersey. He is one of only five lawyers profiled on the legal list.

Mr. Lustberg was recognized for his successful efforts in overturning the ban on same-sex marriage in New Jersey. The Gibbons Fellowship served as lead counsel in Garden State Equality v. Dow, in which the Superior Court of New Jersey declared the state’s prohibition on same-sex marriage, and relegation of lesbian and gay couples to civil unions, unconstitutional. On October 21, 2013, same-sex couples in New Jersey began to marry; that same day, the state dropped its appeal of the Superior Court decision, and the victory for which Mr. Lustberg had been fighting for over a decade was a reality. He was also recognized for these efforts by the New Jersey Law Journal, which named him its 2013 New Jersey “Lawyer of the Year.”

“We are proud to see Larry recognized as one of the most influential people in New Jersey,” stated Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons. “His leadership in the area of public interest law is an inspiration to all of us at Gibbons.”

The 100+ Club list is compiled by reporters for The Star-Ledger and writers for Inside Jersey. The list of honorees was divided into five subcategories: State Politics/Local Politics and Labor/Activism; Law/Philanthropy and Business/Real Estate; Technology/Health Care and Literature/Power Couples; Sports/Education and Arts/ Science; and Entertainment/Music and Food/Celebrity. Honorees in this year’s Law category alongside Mr. Lustberg include Paul Fishman, the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, and Mary Jacobson, the top Superior Court judge in New Jersey.

Mr. Lustberg is the former President of both the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey and Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey, the latter of which awarded him its highest honor, the Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award. He has served on and chaired numerous court and government committees and nonprofit and philanthropic boards, and has been a member of the law school faculties of Seton Hall, Rutgers, and New York Universities. Currently, Mr. Lustberg is the Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Fund for New Jersey and a member of the New Jersey State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, for which he recently chaired a subcommittee on immigration. He is a recognized authority in constitutional and criminal law and procedure, responsible for many seminal federal and state court decisions in a broad range of cases, and is a Fellow of both the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is also a Lifetime Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
