Special education law is a hot topic in many New Jersey communities. As a matter of New Jersey and federal law, every child is entitled to a free and appropriate public education. Nonetheless, on any given day, parents across the state battle with school districts to ensure that their children are receiving the necessary services for meaningful educations. In some instances, children who once received services are no longer receiving the same types of assistance. Navigating the special education process is daunting and often requires parents to seek legal counsel.

This presentation will provide:

  • An overview of the special education process, from eligibility to due process;
  • A discussion of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and the provision of services for a child with special needs, including accommodations in the classroom, services for a specific learning disability, or an out-of-district placement; and
  • Steps to advocate for a child when services are interrupted or not provided in violation of the IEP.
