Christine A. Amalfe, Chair of the Employment & Labor Law Department of Gibbons P.C., has been appointed as a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) Advisory Council for the Initiative on Achieving Long-Term Careers for Women in Law/Summit Co-Chair for a one-year term.

This new Presidential Initiative will focus on increasing the number of women lawyers who pursue successful long-term careers in the legal industry and will be led by incoming ABA President Hilarie Bass and Initiative Co-Chairs Roberta Liebenberg and Stephanie Scharf. The Initiative will fund innovative applied research projects conducted in collaboration with the American Bar Foundation and other organizations on the subject of legal careers for women lawyers using life cycle models borrowed from various fields of study. The Advisory Council, consisting of practicing lawyers and professionals in legal careers, will play an integral role in shaping the studies to aid legal employers in promoting and retaining women lawyers and eliminating the gender attrition gap.

According to the ABA, “The overall goal is to make empirically based recommendations for what law firms, corporations, bar associations, and individual lawyers can do to enhance the prospects for women to reach the highest levels of practice.” The Initiative will also sponsor two invitation-only National Summits, featuring speakers who are national leaders in the industry. The first Summit is expected to take place in November 2017 at Harvard Law School, while the second will be held in the fall of 2018.

“Through her actions and example, Christine has proven to be a dedicated advocate for the advancement of women in the profession,” says Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of the firm. “The breadth and depth of her experience will surely make her an important asset to the Initiative’s Advisory Council.”

A co-founder of the internationally recognized Gibbons Women’s Initiative, Ms. Amalfe has served as president of the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) Foundation and as a Trustee of the NJSBA’s Women in the Profession section. Previously, the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association presented her with its Women’s Initiative & Leaders in Law (WILL) Platinum Award for her work supporting the advancement of women in the legal profession, and the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University has also recognized her efforts.

At Gibbons, Ms. Amalfe represents corporations in the areas of employment law and litigation. She is listed among the region’s leading employment lawyers by Woodward/White Best Lawyers®, Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and Thomson Reuters New Jersey Super Lawyers, which includes her among the top 100 attorneys and top 50 female attorneys in the state. In addition, Ms. Amalfe has been listed as a “State Litigation Star” in Benchmark Litigation, named one of the “Best 50 Women in Business” in NJBIZ, and featured as one of Profiles in Diversity Journal’s “Women Worth Watching.” She was elected an At-Large Trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association and serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the NJSBA’s Labor & Employment Law Section. She was also a recipient of the New Jersey Law Journal’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
