Foreign Legal Internship Program (FLIP)
Since 2000, the Foreign Legal Internship Program of the New York office of Gibbons P.C. (“Gibbons”) has offered German referendars the opportunity to spend their “Wahlstation” (last part of the mandatory German legal internship) with our firm.
Gibbons, founded in 1926, is one of the nation’s leading law firms with more than 210 attorneys and offices in New York, Newark and Trenton, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
We provide high quality services in all legal areas, including Business and Commercial Litigation and Corporate Law, at regional, national and international levels. Over the past fifty years, we have also represented small, medium and large German businesses.
The 3 to 4-month program attracts all those who enjoy combining a challenging legal internship with the excitement of Manhattan’s fast-paced working environment.
Our training program offers you an in-depth overview of the U.S. legal system and the opportunity to concentrate in one of our practice areas. Activities typically include projects that present an inside view of the work of an American law firm, as well as attendance at court hearings and internal training sessions. You will be supervised by our German colleague, Dr. Myriam Rastaetter, and involved in the projects of two to three attorneys.
Please note, that we do not compensate referendars during their training period. We recognize, however, that living expenses in New York are relatively high and therefore provide a modest monthly “housing stipend.” After your application has been accepted, we will provide you with additional information related to housing in New York, visa requirements, medical insurance, etc.
Requirements:
You have successfully passed the First State Examination with an above average grade (at least “satisfactory”). You have strong English skills and you are interested in becoming familiar with the Anglo-American legal system.
Hiring procedure:
Referendars are recruited for a period of 3-4 months, so that 3 to 4 referendars can spend their “Wahlstation” at Gibbons each year. Due to the large number of interested candidates, a timely application six months prior to the desired start is recommended.
Your application should include the following documents:
- A personal letter in English, explaining the applicant’s interest in the program
- A resume in English
- Copies of credentials (e.g., copy of 1. State Examination Certificate)
- A letter of recommendation, in English or German, from a member of the legal profession.
