Lawrence S. Lustberg, Chair of the Criminal Defense Department of Gibbons P.C., has been named the number one lawyer in the state by Thomson Reuters  New Jersey Super Lawyers. For many years, Mr. Lustberg has been selected to the New Jersey Super Lawyers list and the list of the top 10 lawyers in the state.

Throughout his career, Mr. Lustberg has argued groundbreaking cases before federal and state courts up to the United States Supreme Court, and he is well known and highly regarded for his extensive criminal defense, public interest, and pro bono legal work. He is a recognized authority in constitutional and criminal law and procedure, responsible for many seminal federal and state court decisions in a broad range of cases. After serving a pivotal role in the historic 2013 overturning of New Jersey’s ban on same-sex marriage, Mr. Lustberg was named the state’s “Lawyer of the Year” by the New Jersey Law Journal, which also presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

“We are extremely proud to see Larry recognized as one of the most influential lawyers in New Jersey,” said Patrick C. Dunican Jr., Chairman and Managing Director of Gibbons. “His work on behalf of clients and his contributions to public interest law are an inspiration to all of us here at Gibbons.”

Mr. Lustberg is the former president of both the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey and Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey, each of which has awarded him its highest honor – the William J. Brennan, Jr. Award and Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Memorial Award, respectively. Mr. Lustberg has been the recipient of numerous honors from organizations such as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, ACLU of New Jersey, Legal Services of New Jersey, Garden State Equality, Partners for Women and Justice, and Essex County Bar Association, among many others. He has long been listed in Woodward/White Best Lawyers® and the Chambers USA Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and he was included in the inaugural Star Ledger Inside Jersey’s “100+ Club” recognizing the most influential people in New Jersey.

At Gibbons, in addition to chairing the firm’s Criminal Defense Department, Mr. Lustberg is the Director of the firm’s John J. Gibbons Fellowship in Public Interest & Constitutional Law, which litigates historic, cutting-edge civil rights and civil liberties cases. Prior to joining the firm as its first Gibbons Fellow, he served as an Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of New Jersey for five years. Mr. Lustberg has broad, substantive experience in such areas as securities, antitrust, and many other white collar criminal issues, including tax and pension fraud, political corruption, and government procurement impropriety. He also handles non-white collar matters, providing round-the-clock, interdisciplinary service for corporate or individual clients who find themselves, family members, or colleagues confronting law enforcement in other contexts. As Director of the award-winning Gibbons Fellowship, Mr. Lustberg is responsible for the scope of the Fellowship’s work and the breadth of issues it addresses.
